Why You React the Way You Do With Money | Ep. 239
Sometimes our reactions to money surprise us. A sale feels difficult to pass up. A conversation becomes uncomfortable before we understand why. We make a plan we intend to follow, then find ourselves doing something different.
Nino and Maria explore the thoughts, feelings, and learned messages that can become part of those moments. Nino shares how his own experience in therapy helped him recognize reactions he hadn’t previously understood. Maria considers how everyday experiences can communicate lessons about possessions, relationships, and money—even when those lessons weren’t what anyone intended to teach.
The conversation becomes especially concrete when Maria recalls a couple struggling to stay within their grocery budget. Shopping together had become stressful, but it was also time they wanted with each other. As Nino listens, he realizes he had nearly suggested giving them more money to spend in that category.
They also consider what happens after we begin recognizing a pattern: the discomfort of taking responsibility, the value of someone who can offer an honest reflection, and the temptation to step in and fix things for someone we care about. Understanding why we’ve responded a certain way can open a difficult, hopeful conversation about what comes next.
