A Money Plan That Leaves Room to Say Yes | Ep. 238

You’ve written down your income and bills, and the numbers suggest there should be money left over. But groceries still need buying, something renews next month, and a friend has invited you to do something you’d enjoy. It can be hard to know how much of that apparent leftover money is actually available.

Nino begins this New Money Habits Classic by remembering how he first approached budgeting. He would subtract the recurring bills from his income and then look for money to buy food or put gas in the car. Those expenses hadn’t made it into the plan, even though he knew they were coming.

He also considers the timing that a monthly total can overlook. A paycheck arriving near the end of one month may need to cover bills at the beginning of the next. Nino walks through planning around pay periods, including what happens when one paycheck appears to leave plenty of room and the next feels tight.

The conversation then turns toward spending we want to enjoy. Nino talks about pocket money, saving for spontaneous opportunities, and giving flexible categories enough structure to know what’s available. He shares how one client funds her Dutch Bros app each pay period. She can enjoy the coffee she likes within that amount, and when the balance runs out, the next refill waits until payday.
